Substance Abuse in Nebraska

The shipment of meth through the state is the main concern of local law enforcement in the state. Providing easy access east to west across the state Interstate 80 is a favor route for smugglers.

  • Cocaine: In the state of Nebraska the cocaine trade is mainly controlled by Mexican organizations. Crack cocaine is a major issue in the urban areas of the state.
  • Heroin: Nebraska does not have much heroin use overall, however some of the drug trafficking distributors have it available.
  • Meth: With both the Hispanic drug groups as well as a large population of small meth labs spread out through the state meth is a major concern for state law enforcement. This is a major problem for the state with meth available in just about every community in Nebraska.
  • Club Drugs: With many users being deceived by stories about how they are not harmful to their users, club drugs have been growing in use at disturbingly fast rates. The majority of club drugs brought into the state come from the states of Arizona and Florida.
  • Marijuana: Marijuana is the most used illicit drug in the state of Nebraska. Local cultivators employ both outdoor and hydroponic methods to produce the plant. Many marijuana raids undertaken by state law enforcement have taken upwards of 500 plants each.

Substance Abuse Statistics

Nebraska treatment centers provide the state and law enforcement officials with statistics about drug abuse and substance abuse recovery. They do this to provide the facts and information that will help the state better understand its substance abuse problem. Gaining an understanding of who is abusing drugs, how they are acquiring them and what they are abusing is the key to putting an end to the substance abuse problem on a statewide level.

  • Gender Breakdown of Admissions: Statistically speaking, men admit themselves to Nebraska treatment centers more often than women do. Nebraska treatment facilities report that 68.7 percent of their admissions are by men, and only 31.3 percent of their admissions are by women.
  • Admissions Involving Alcohol: Alcoholism is one of the most prevalent substance abuse problems in the state. 37.6 percent of all admissions are due to alcoholism on its own. An additional 18.2 percent of admissions are made due to alcohol addiction coupled with another substance abuse problem such as heroin or marijuana abuse.
  • Admissions Involving Cocaine: 6.8 percent of all admissions to Nebraska treatment centers have to do with smoked cocaine. An additional 1.6 percent of admissions relate to cocaine taken by other routes.
  • Admissions Involving Marijuana: 9.5 percent of all admissions to Nebraska treatment centers have to do with marijuana abuse.
  • Admissions Involving Other Drugs: Heroin is the least prevalent drug that people seek treatment for, making up only 0.1 percent of admissions. Methamphetamine abuse, on the other hand, accounts for more than 14 percent of all admissions into Nebraska treatment facilities.

Detox and Withdrawal

Substance abuse is one of the most rapidly advancing diseases in the world today. It affects people from all races and tax brackets. It does not discriminate. Anyone that is susceptible to addictions of any type can become victims of substance abuse. There are many ways to start getting involved with substance abuse. People with high pressure lives that are trying to deal with daily stress become addicts due to seeking something that will help them to relax a little. That “little” eventually brings about a need for more, and before they know it, these people have become full blown addicts.

The good news is that there is help for the people that truly want it. The not so great news is that the treatment is probably one of the most difficult things that an addict will ever have to go through. Because of the dangers and discomfort associated with substance abuse treatment, it is imperative that the addict is in a reputable rehabilitation facility so that there are plenty of medical professionals on hand that have been trained to handle treatment of substance abuse. These are the people that can make the patient much more comfortable during the process.

Perhaps the worst part of substance abuse treatment is detoxification. This is what happens when the body is denied the poison that got it addicted in the first place. Not only does it take away the poison, but it depletes the body of it. An addict that has been hooked for a long time is not going to have an easy time of it during detox. This causes withdrawal symptoms, many of which are hard to handle. These symptoms range from mildly uncomfortable to severe to fatal. It is a difficult time to get through, but it is completely necessary to get all of the poison from the body.

While detoxification is rather brutal on the body, the second part can be just as difficult for some patients. The brutality this time around involves having your mind treated. Specially trained counselors and psychiatrists will want to look at your emotional, psychological and mental background to see where the seed for addiction might have been planted. It is very important that these issues are unearthed and addressed so that the substance abuse is not likely to return. If the underlying cause is not dealt with, there is always the danger of the pain returning, which can give hold over to the addiction once more.

Treating Substance Abuse

When you decide that you are ready to overcome your substance abuse problem, the first step in the process is to find the right help. There are many different ways for you to treat substance abuse, so how will you find the right solution to meet your needs? Here are some of the considerations that you are going to want to make prior to selecting Nebraska treatment centers to meet your needs.

When looking for a treatment plan in Nebraska you have a choice between inpatient and outpatient options depending on what your needs are. If you are really struggling with your substance abuse problem an inpatient program will take you away from the people and the environment that helped feed your substance abuse problem. If there is just too much going on with your life that you aren't able to step away for an extended period of time, outpatient options can work around your life. Be sure to carefully examine all your options before you choose to make sure that your needs are met.

  • Does it matter if you choose long term or short term help to meet your needs? Some people have a preference, while others simply want to stay in rehab until they feel sober again. You can choose a short term program if you only have a limited amount of time for your recovery. You can choose Nebraska treatment centers that provide you with an end date, or you can choose Nebraska treatment facilities that let you rehabilitate until you are ready to check out.
  • Are there specific therapies or treatment programs that you are specifically interested in taking advantage of? Different Nebraska treatment centers are going to offer completely different solutions to rehab and recovery. If there is a specific type of detox, counseling, therapy or behavior modification that you want to take advantage of, then make sure that you are only considering the Nebraska treatment programs that are going to provide the solutions that you seek.
